Laptop Wireless Card Connecting You to the Internet Anywhere

The major trend in laptop features is having a laptop wireless card built inside your mobile computer to allow instant access to the Internet anytime and anywhere you are as long as a LAN connection is available. Without the hassles of using cables and wires commonly used in desktop computers, laptop takes computer users to a higher technology of Internet connection through the wireless card. The card allows you to connect instantly to the Internet through a signal transmission coming from a router. Some uses a cell tower to make this connection possible. The card may be conveniently built inside a laptop unit or can be an external device.

To connect your laptop wireless card to the Internet, you need to have an Internet service that is accessible through a wireless router or a modem. Wireless hotspots are available in many public establishments thereby giving wide access of hotspots that allow laptop users connect to the Internet wirelessly. To be able to take advantage of using the wireless card in your laptop, it has to be supported with similar protocol as the wireless router that supplies an Internet connection signal to your computer device wirelessly. Four wireless protocols are available namely A, B, G, and N. They vary in terms of speed as well as the compatibility applied to home networks.

Modern laptops come in built in wireless cards. It uses a card directly connecting to the Internet via a cell phone tower. Externally placed wireless cards allow the connection of your notebook to the Internet using the PCI slot or USB port of the laptop. Wireless Internet & USB Modems – MTS MBlaze

Wireless Internet is a technology that has been much talked about but hasn’t been able to catch up to the level that one might have expected. But as we move more towards “mobility” and “mobile devices” with the onset of Mobile Phones, Netbooks, Laptops and now Tablet PCs, we are getting more and more into the habit of having access to all our stuff “on the move”.

A laptop in today’s context looses its USP of portability if it has to be wired to an internet cable all the time! And this is where the wireless internet/data cards/usb modems fit in. ‘Plug n Play’ is what they are mostly referred to as, simply implying that you just plug in your USB modem and you are ready to go!

The most popular of the Wireless Internet devices is the USB modems that look identical to pen drives and are most convenient to use. There are a variety of options in this domain, the more popular ones being MTS MBlaze and Tata Photon. I had been reading and researching a lot about the efficiency of these devices before taking a decision on opting for them. To utter dismay, there was a lot of negative talk that I came across regarding the reliability and speed of these devices as compared to the wired broadband that we use. And quite right, there has to be a natural regression in the performance that is dependent on the media of transfer! And might I use the cliche of “Not comparing apples to oranges”!!

So in keeping with this approach, I view the device in question as an entity by itself and not an offshoot or more aptly – a replacement for wired broadband. To start with, Tata Photon has been an old timer in this domain. Its been there for long, but there has always been a question mark on its performance. MTS on the other hand is a new kid on the block, which in turn meant that I had no bad reviews or customer experiences to counter while opting for it. Secondly, they had quite an attractive offer that seemed worth a try in any case. Thus, I opted for the MTS MBlaze as my choice.

I have now been with MTS for more than 3 months and to my utter surprise, all inhibitions and doubts regarding the worth of wireless devices was to turn out to be only a misconception or fallacy. MTS has been giving me extremely good service ever since. But do keep in mind, I speak for the device not comparing it with its wired counterparts – there stands no valid comparison. By itself, the device provides to you a very decent surfing speed that would meet all your basic requirements of checking mails, blogging, social networking, etc that you may want to do. Its quite a reasonable gadget that serves you good enough to get access of the basics when on the move or just too lazy to put your main computer on. Yes, there are times when the connection does give up, but a few moments wait and reconnection invariably solved the problem for me. Of course, you will need a standard wired connection if your work is net dependent or quite intensive, but for all general light use, MBlaze does it for you. It comes in specially handy when you need to for instance update your laptop with latest virus definitions or windows update. You no longer need to plug in your laptop to your internet cable for this sole purpose. One more thing I noticed was, although at times some sites may take time to load in case of a peak hour usage, but the downloads work quite well with MBlaze – its always been rapid with good decent speeds. But as I say so, its important to also keep in mind that much of this may also depend on the area in which you are located and how widespread the network is in that area.

Somehow this form of internet takes me back in time to the good old days when we used to be so dependent on the ‘Dial Up Internet’ through our phones; It today seems a crazy proposition. But don’t worry, this is a technology that stands somewhere in between – far better than the dial up but obviously not comparable to the wired broadband. As a gadget, this is a must have if you use a laptop. Try it and you would feel that it changes the whole meaning of a notebook pc releasing it from being restricted to one place by the wired net connection which in effect negates the sole purpose of a notebook – portability and mobility. So get rid of those wires and savor the experience of internet browsing on the move!

Wireless Internet Providers – Who is Best?

So you want to get wireless internet for your laptop, but you’re not sure what you’re options are huh? This short article will help you to choose the best mobile internet provider based on your circumstances. There a few criteria you should consider when choosing a mobile internet provider to receive wireless internet for laptops. They are:

Monthly Rate: Wireless internet for laptops is generally a little more expensive than internet for your home. A mobile internet provider generally charges $45-80 a month for their service with $60 a month being average.

-Lowest Cost Provider: CLEAR Wireless 4G, Cricket Wireless 3G ($45/month)
-Highest Cost Provider: Sprint Wireless 3G/4G, CLEAR Wireless 3G/4G, Qwest Wireless ($80/month)

Contract: Wireless internet providers generally require a 2 year contract. There are some however that do not require 2 year contracts and offer a month-to-month agreement option. Generally the cell phone companies will require 2 year contracts.

-Companies that Offer Monthly Agreements: CLEAR Wireless and Cricket Wireless
-Companies that Require 2 Year Contracts: Verizon, Qwest, AT&T, and Sprint

Download Speed: There is a large variance in download speeds amongst mobile internet providers. The slowest provider, Cricket Wireless, provides download speeds of 0.5-1.5 Mbps. The cell phone companies (Verizon, Qwest, Sprint 3G, and T-Mobile) offer wireless internet speeds of 0.5-2.0 Mbps. CLEAR Wireless offers mobile internet speeds of 2.5-10 Mbps. The reason for the great difference in download speeds is that CLEAR and Sprint operate a 4G wireless broadband network, whereas Cricket and the other cell phone providers use a 3G network.

-Slowest Download Speeds: Cricket Wireless, Qwest Wireless
-Fastest Download Speeds: CLEAR Wireless and Sprint Wireless (4G)

Coverage: There are differences in mobile internet coverage amongst the wireless internet providers also. 4G wireless networks have not been built nationwide yet so its coverage is somewhat limited. Currently 4G is available in over 25+ metropolitan areas nationwide (as of Jan 2010). Some of the larger city areas with coverage include Las Vegas, Portland, Seattle, Atlanta, Philadelphia, Dallas, Baltimore and Chicago. Because of this limited coverage, 4G coverage with CLEAR and Sprint are only offered in certain areas. By the end of 2010 however, 4G will be available in 80+ cities. 3G on the other hand is available pretty much nationwide, although it is somewhat limited for rural coverage.

-3G Coverage Only: Verizon, Qwest, T-Mobile
-4G Only Option: CLEAR Wireless
-Both 3G and 4G: CLEAR Wireless and Sprint Wireless

As you have probably now gathered, you have lots of options when it comes to mobile internet for laptops. What wireless internet provider you decide on will probably depend on the preceding criteria I have discussed. I hope that this article helps you to make an informed decision in choosing your wireless internet provider. If you require further assistance, please check out my resource box and website below.

Lightweight Laptops Make 4G Wireless a Must Have

While a laptop is a whole lot easier to cart around than any desktop computer, it still has its pitfalls. They may be quite lightweight, but ask anyone who carries one to and from work or school on a daily basis and they will tell you that sometimes this lightweight tool can be a heavy burden. Those extra 5 to 10 pounds can compound quickly when the weight of school books, work portfolios, photography equipment or other miscellaneous necessities is factored into the equation. The results can be chronic back pain, terrible difficulty squeezing into a train car or city bus in the morning, and a persistent paranoia that someone is about to mug you and take away the center of your personal or professional universe. Being a laptop carrier means constantly backing files up just in case it goes missing, and means constantly being on the lookout for thieves. It means never being able to set your bag down for a second, even if heading to happy hour after office hours, or indeed even being able to go since you’ve got the extra load. Carrying a laptop around just to access the internet and while away time in internet cafes can be done, but let’s face it, that kind of dedication is best left to those who find it truly worth it to look ‘cool’ while sipping their lattes and typing away, and is not necessarily a practical or enjoyable activity for the great majority of people.

All of these old laptop mobility problems are now changing since the invention of the netbook. These tiny portable devices allow users real internet mobility all while fitting snugly into a purse or backpack. Lightweight and mobile they are easy to cart around, are inconspicuous eliminating the risk of being a walking target in cities, and allow for much more comfortable typing and screen use than other mobile internet technology like 3G cell phones and mobile devices. In fact, along with the arrival of the fourth generation of mobile internet or 4G wireless internet, not only can internet users get online on the go easily with a netbook, but they can access broadband internet from anywhere in town. Even while actually in motion on a city bus, in the car, or on the train as long as there is a viable signal, netbook users can be surfing the net at broadband speeds.

In fact, the service is so fast and reliable that it can even be used to replace a home connection, meaning internet users can get online both at home and on the road for one low price. The connection is private and secure no matter where you are meaning privacy issues are even less of an issue than with Wi-Fi off a router with a normal home connection. That’s pretty convenient considering you can get online literally anywhere and everywhere without ever paying another ‘by the minute’ internet café charge again! Today, technology has made computers mobile. At the same time 4G internet has made mobile broad a reality too!

Connecting With Verizon Wireless Broadband

Verizon wireless broadband allows you to do the same thing as can be done with land lines. Initially, the speed in which data was transferred was a major stumbling block. Wireless phones were able to access the internet in the same speed that dial up modems could do. Because of their new technology, Verizon wireless broadband enjoys true broadband speeds. You are able to sign on to the internet faster and there are several different ways to connect with companies like Verizon wireless broadband. Customer service is what prompts companies like Verizon to constantly look for ways to improve their technology and bring even more customer satisfaction to their broadband service.

Verizon is in the market selling cellular phones of all sizes and colors. It is these phones that Verizon wireless broadband uses to connect to the internet. Verizon’s cellular phones have vivid color screens and sound technology. No doubt you are familiar with Verizon’s massive advertisement campaign promoting their technology. You can also listen to digital music and video which makes their phones more marketable especially with the younger crowd. With the right software and with cable, you can connect to your computer for the appropriate wireless internet connection wherever you happen to be.

If you would rather not use your phone to connect to the internet by means of your computer, then you can research Verizon wireless broadband and use their avenue to connecting to the internet. Several laptop manufacturers have been used, by Verizon, to make their computers compatible with Verizon’s technology. Perhaps the most flexible means of doing this is by purchasing a PC card so that you can connect to the internet using any laptop or with the one you already have.

If you are running your own business, Verizon wireless broadband offers a means to access their network by way of a network router. The network router isn’t for constant use but for maintaining network connectivity when your main line is not working. It is a backup device that will detect when your company’s main service goes down and will connect to the Verizon wireless broadband network instead. You are still able to conduct business as usual without any major interruptions.

For whatever reason you use your computer, Verizon wireless broadband service has a plan for you that will be reasonably priced and will allow you to take advantage of signing onto the internet. Your phone line is not tied up and you can continue surfing the net while still engaged in a phone conversation.

Main Components Of A Basic Broadband Internet Home Wireless Network

Today we will all want and often need to connect to the Internet in our homes, which we can now do with a home wireless network, and in addition those of us with Laptops or Notebooks will also want to connect from wherever we are, even if we are just visiting friends or relatives and also when we are on holiday.

So for a mobile solution that we can connect to from anywhere in our homes it needs to be a wireless connection for true portability and ease of use. The days and slow speeds of a direct dial-up phone connection through a land line are fortunately pretty much over as now what we all need is a high speed broadband connection.

You can get broadband connections either via a DSL connection through your land line phone or via the cable line that feeds cable TV into your home. But if you want to do this without a direct wire connection to your computer you have to go for a home wireless network that uses one of these two different types of broadband connection.

These days there is plenty of bandwidth in the wireless equipment that you need for sharing out a broadband Internet connection throughout your home and you can do this without spending too much money.

It is probably true to say that today even the slowest components of the existing wireless equipment for a home wireless network is actually faster than the speeds that a cable connection or DSL modem can connect you to the Internet form your home.

Although initially it was necessary to have either a cable or DSL modem to process the Internet signal from the cable or DSL connection respectively and in addition a wireless router to connect to one of these modems and at the same time provide the wireless Internet signal for your computers to pickup, today you can use just a single piece of equipment that does both jobs of the modem and the router combined.

So what we are saying here is that it is mow much more common that when you sign up for broadband internet the company or service provider that you pay for this will now supply you with a single wireless router that has the broadband modem built into it.

In addition to these in your home wireless network you will also need a wireless adapter in your computer to receive the wireless Internet signal from your wireless router. If you have a desktop computer or even an old laptop you can buy these separately as an add-on so you can connect that machine to the Internet over broadband.

It is more likely today though that if you have a new laptop, notebook or netbook you will find that there is already a wireless adapter built-in to the computer, which you will not even be able to see. If you don’t have an integrated adapter you will need to buy one and you can simply add the wireless Internet capability that you need to it by getting a USB adapter, and then you will be able to connect to your home wireless network effortlessly.

This is the most straight forward and easiest way of creating a broadband Internet connection using a home wireless network that anyone in your home that has a computer with a wireless adapter can connect to. All the equipment you need, except for the wireless adapter, will be provided by your Internet service provider and often it is free.

Therefore the major cost of this is the payment for the Internet connection service from your ISP and most often will vary by the speed and capacity of the service that you need or want. But that is a whole other story!
